Uptown

by Kathleen Kraft

Sidewalk showers

wall-less

under scaffolding

heads securely in place,

pipes—copper, thin

     Are they for rescue workers

     Yes

But I knew they were for everyone

Water

source rushing

throats burning

source

enormity flowing

sprinkling down heavy light

Someone presses a button and

they go

cool

warm

just right

Move on, dry
in the pouring sunlight

Come
Smooth
The water is clear
Take another one
So many
I knew

I could almost tell them
But I was too far away
